In the world of architecture, no surface is ever just a surface. The materials we walk on, touch, and experience are vital elements of a building’s identity.

Why Architects Know: A Floor is Only as Good as Its Surface
Co-Lab between Hørning and Rubio Monocoat at Münchenbryggeriet

In the world of architecture, no surface is ever just a surface. The materials we walk on, touch, and experience are vital elements of a building’s identity. When designing public spaces that must combine elegance with durability, choosing the right floor, and how it’s treated, can make all the difference.

This philosophy lies at the heart of our collaboration with Rubio Monocoat in different projects, which ensures our hardwood floors are not only crafted to the highest standards but are also cared for with precision and expertise.

Tegelsalen, Münchenbryggeriet: Where History Meets Modern Design

In Stockholm, the iconic Münchenbryggeriet has undergone a transformation. Within its brick-clad industrial walls, a new venue has emerged: Tegelsalen. With six metres of soaring ceiling height, preserved 19th-century windows, and original exposed brickwork, the space exudes authentic historical charm while embracing a modern aesthetic.

For a venue designed to host up to 150 guests, where atmosphere and durability go hand in hand, every material choice matters. That is why Hørning supplied PEFC-certified rustic oak planks, delivering a floor with rich texture and timeless character. These floors were not merely laid; they were curated to enhance the tactile experience of the space, ensuring visual warmth beneath every step.

Craftsmanship Meets Surface Science

But even the finest floorboards need protection to withstand daily use in a high-traffic venue. That’s where Rubio Monocoat comes in.

With a natural oil finish that enhances the oak’s depth and grain, Rubio ensures that the beauty of the wood is both visible and shielded. Yet, it does not stop there. A comprehensive cleaning and maintenance programme tailored specifically for Münchenbryggeriet means these floors will retain their elegance for decades, no matter how many events they host.

For architects, this holistic approach is key. Designing with durability in mind is no longer optional, it is essential in sustainable, responsible architecture.

Building Floors for the Future

By choosing PEFC-certified wood, the project honours a commitment to responsible forestry and material traceability. But sustainability is not just about sourcing. It’s about ensuring that every floor installed today can meet the demands of tomorrow - both in aesthetics and performance.

The collaboration between Hørning and Rubio Monocoat is a testament to what happens when craftsmanship meets surface science. From showroom-level beauty to lifecycle maintenance, this combination offers architects a complete solution that goes beyond product delivery.

At Münchenbryggeriet’s Tegelsalen, the floor is not just a backdrop. It is an architectural feature, crafted and cared for to enrich the space it inhabits.
